Do you know that Android smartphone screen locks actually come in various types with different settings? Let's understand them correctly to use your smartphone safely!

I'll use Galaxy (Android 14) for this explanation, but the basic functions are the same for other devices. Since Android operations and display names vary depending on the device and version, please compare with your own device!

Types of Screen Locks

1. PIN

PIN lock is a method where you set up a number of 4 or more digits to unlock your device. It's considered to have medium to high security level. Be careful, as forgetting your PIN will require you to reset your device, which will erase all data ⚠️

2. Password

Password lock requires at least 4 characters including at least one letter. By making complex combinations, it offers higher security than PIN 🔐 Like PIN, forgetting your password will result in device reset and deletion of all data.

3. Pattern

Pattern lock involves unlocking by sliding your finger to "draw a specific pattern" on the screen. While it has medium security level, its intuitive operation makes it user-friendly. Like PIN and password, forgetting your pattern will require device reset and erase all data.

4. Swipe

Swipe lock lets you unlock the screen with just a swipe. While convenient compared to others, anyone can unlock it. Note that using this setting will delete face recognition data for security reasons.

5. Face Recognition

Face recognition unlocks your device using your face. For security reasons, you'll need to enter your pattern, PIN, or password every 24 hours or if the device hasn't been used for over 4 hours. It's a method that balances usability and security as it unlocks just by looking at the screen 👍

6. Fingerprint Recognition

Fingerprint recognition is a convenient method that quickly unlocks your device by scanning your finger. You'll need to enter your pattern, PIN, or password every 72 hours.

Is No Screen Lock Dangerous?

While it's possible to use no lock, I don't recommend it for safety reasons! Your smartphone stores lots of personal information including photos, contacts, social media accounts, and banking apps. If lost or stolen, this information can be easily accessed.

If it falls into malicious hands, there's a risk of personal information leaks or financial theft. Not using a lock means taking on significant risks. Make sure to set some kind of lock on your smartphone to protect your data and privacy 🔐

For enhanced security, set your device to automatically reset after 20 failed unlock attempts. This reduces the risk of unauthorized access if lost or stolen.

Set WiFi and mobile data to "stay on" when the device is locked. This enables remote tracking and control if the device is lost.

Lockdown Option

Shows "Lockdown" option in power button menu to disable extended unlock, biometric unlock, and lock screen notifications. When "Lockdown mode" is ON, face and fingerprint recognition are disabled, requiring PIN, password, or pattern unlock.
